Freelance Working in Newspaper

January 2002 during my holiday, I decided to have new experience by working. I applied work as surveyor in Jawa Pos newspaper and I have been accepted. My task was to collect information or to survey Jawa Pos's customers about Jawa Pos service, whether they were satisfy or not. For that purpose, I have been given verification letter which explained that I was their surveyor (Picture 1.) and some sheets of questionnaire that should be filled by the customers.

It was quite fascinating, because it should be done door to door or personally. In fact, it was difficult in executing this job in the field. Even I had already "work evidence" from this company, I still got suspicious reactions. Many different responses I got from the people. Some of them were very warm welcoming me and discuss in long time, or even gave me a glass of water. There were also some people didn't like my coming and gave negative response. Well, it was normal by reason of criminal rate was done by unknown person in the community was high. After I have collected customers opinion about the service of this company, I had to give the results to the company and they checked it whether I really have done it or not.

From this working, I learned how were the customers opinions and desires about service of the company. I also met new friends who also had the same aim with me to get experience by working. Two weeks after I have worked, I decided to end my work. This decision I made for the reason that I had to start my study in new semester.

Part-time Working in Consultant

Starting from 2001, I was active in many activities of extra campus organization. One big activities of my organization was Cadre event. I was a fundraiser of this event. My task was collecting fund from alumni of this organization door to door. During my task as fundraiser, I met this person whose owned a consultant. The name of this consultant is "PT. Eltekons". Coincidentally, he is an alumni of my university also. After some dialogues, he offered me to work in his consultant. I was really surprise and I accepted it. I thought that I want to learn about consultant and I want to have experience in consultant field.

I was in the fourth semester of my study in the university when I worked part time in this consultant for one year, during 2002 - 2003. I thought that I was so lucky, because actually finding consultant and work in this field was difficult. Moreover getting some jobs which is suitable with our background study in this period was also difficult. Unemployment rate in my city, Surabaya, was still high.

In this consultant, I worked as an assistant of social and environmental fields. My tasks were to make technical proposals, collect some primary data and information by surveying many study areas in East Java (see: my activities in Indonesia). I met many people with different skills, qualifications, and background study. From a senior who had experience in certain field for many years until some students from my university whose worked in the same consultant. I learned and exchanged experience with many people I met. In the year 2003, I decided to be focused in preparing my internship in the upcoming year of 2004 and my bachelor thesis after that. One year was not enough to understand this world. I had already the knowledge but only a bit of the big circle.

Internship

In 2004, I carried out practical work (internship) in PT. Petrokimia Gresik. According to the regulation in my program study, it is an obligation for students in the last year of study to make internship for minimum 2 months. It is a kind of cooperation between university and industrial in the form of real work practice. I made it in a group with my friend. We applied an internship in PT. Petrokimia Gresik (Petro Gresik) and proposed the title (see: curriculum vitae for the title). Petro Gresik is a big private company of chemical fertilizer in East Java. They has a good reputation in producing the product and good consciousness of environmental responsibilities. After we have waited for some days, we were accepted to make this internship and our title were agreed by both of supervisors from the university and the company.

In the first day of my internship, I met with other students from different universities in East Java Province. They were also applied in the same company, but focused on various unit process based on the title proposed. We were gathered in the same building for two days. During two days, we were explained about the company profile, unit processes and groups in the company, regulation in working area, the safety in working, and privacy issue of the unit process plant. After that, we were separated in different groups of working. According to the title agreed, I and my friend were placed in operation units of production, safety, and wastewater treatment. We were also involved in the routine working and meeting. In the closing, we had to write an internship report. The report contains explanation about unit processes (what we have learned) and requested homework to be solved from the supervisor in the company and the university.

Full-time Working in Consultant

In 2005, after I have finished my bachelor thesis, I worked full time in the same planning consultant. This time, I met many new people with very large range of education level and ages (Picture 2), from Junior high school up to bachelor engineering graduated. In the first day, I adapted with my working environment. Even the consultant was the same, but with many new personals inside, changes will be occurred automatically.

In my working I should analyze different fields of study such as economy, social, culture, tourism, education, except my background study.

I learned about teamwork and cooperation. how to make negotiation with people that we don't know at all, how to concentrate and focus to solve certain problem, managing many things and people, how to organize consultant, how to structure the time and fit it into the schedule.

During my working for 3 years, I think that I like this world. Therefore, I have a dream to own an international engineering consultant in the future later on.

Studying in Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) Surabaya - Indonesia

Being a university student gave many changes especially to my personality and character. Before I became a new college student, I never had any thought that campus life and school life were completely different. In junior high school, we were always informed about anything in relation to our study. For example the schedule of study, important information about examination, etc by our teacher. But in the university, we had to find it out by our selves. All of those were available in the board in front of administration office. According to my senior, if you don't want to be a left person, always read the information in the board.

The big change was I started to go home in the midnight or even in the morning. In the junior high school, I never went home so late.

I enjoy my time in college and work. While in college, I got new insights that I never had before. I studied and knew many things about environmental pollution the management. Honestly, I didn't have any knowledge about engineering before in my senior high school. But, I could adapt good enough with the subjects given. One thing that I like from my last study, I should make many big homework according to the subject. For example; I should make a planning about waste water treatment, water drinking treatment, solid waste management, etc. Even in the beginning was not easy, but in the end I knew how to make the planning in the reality. It's a very valuable lesson to be learned. Besides, I also followed university student's organization and was active in several campus activities.

To enrich my knowledge, in 2002 - 2005, I attended a variety of course trainings and national seminars (see: curriculum vitae). Conducting working while studying gave benefits for me. I met many people who come from a variety cities, background studies, and characters. I was challenged to think actively, critically, independent and broad. I had many experiences from my studying and working. For example, to organize, work together in teams or groups, responsible for activities conducted, argue and defend arguments, behave and act in different situations, and leadership.

March 2006, after I executed project and seminar project, I passed my study in environmental engineering. I earned a title of Bachelor of Engineering (S.T.) with satisfying predicate (see: curriculum vitae).

The History of My Name: My preference name

I will tell you some complicated but interested history around my name and many people around me.

Maybe you have known already my full name is Siti Fauziah and my beloved name is Deti.
In fact, my parents and my other big family from my parents even my parent's friends never call me Siti or Fauziah or Zia. They call me always Deti. Since I was child, my friends in the school (kindergarten up to elementary school) call me also Deti. The society around my home also call me Deti, even they don't know my full name.

In my university in Surabaya, my friends call me in different way. Some of them call me Fafa (Fafa is two repetition of my two first alphabet in my last name Fauziah). But most of them call me Fauziah.

In my working place, my relatives and my boss also my supervisor call me Fauziah or Zia.

In my class of German course in Surabaya, my friends and my teachers call me Siti.

And the last, in my university in Germany, most of my friends call me Siti, only some friends call me Zia (including some of friends in my dormitory in Freiburg).

How about me? Truly, I like to be called Zia. That's why I have given Zia as my world name. Regarding Deti, it's an abbreviation from my parent' name. That's why I take Deti as my homepage address. Overall, call me simple ZIA.

Childhood in Jakarta, Indonesia

Jakarta, February 19, 1982, I was born as the first child of my parents. My father is a native Betawi people and my mother comes from Central Java. My parents gave me the name of Siti Fauziah which means land of pride. Besides, they gave me also beloved name "DETI" which comes from the abbreviation of my parents name "Dede" and "Titik" (see: The history of my name). In 1985, when I was 4 years old, my parents brought me to Surabaya.

My School in Surabaya, Indonesia

My education began directly after me and my parents moved to Surabaya in 1985. I got a complete education here, started from kindergarten up to university. I started my kindergarten at the age of 4 years old. In 1998, I graduated from a private Kindergarten in Surabaya. Then I went to other private elementary school. I studied there for 3 years. In 1995, I continued my education to junior high school also for 3 years and graduated in 1997. In 1997, I continued to a private senior high school. And 3 years later, in 2000, I graduated from a private Senior High School in Surabaya.

As a child, I was active and dynamic, funny, beautiful, smart in dancing and singing, I like to wear traditional clothes when carnival. I made relationship with everyone in my school and even I have some best friends. In the school, I have well enough academic performance. I almost included in the best 10 in my class. I always passed the class and passed the school examination. Many activities I have followed, started from painting, Indonesian Scouts (Pramuka), dance, piano courses, and many types of youth association. I've been a champion of drawing and writing reviews competition. In junior high school, I have been trusted by my friends to be a class representative.

I never have a fix and certain purpose to be reached. Even like that, since I was child until I was 17 years old in junior high school, I have had a fix aspiration to be realized, I want to be an ENTREPRENEUR. In that time I still didn't know, in what field I will focus on, I was still looking the missing chain.

But then ........ new episode of my life began. It's happened started from my 1st dream.
Everything in my live changed...............

The 1st dream:
"I want to be a student of Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) Surabaya in the year 2000 directly after my graduation from senior high school."

This desire came up after I had heard about state college entrance examination from my friends discussion in senior high school. Actually, in the beginning, I never had a plan to study in ITS. My plan after I had graduated from senior high school was very simple, to study in private university and take economy or English language as my choice. But suddenly, I had very strong desire to change my plan and realize my dream.
In that time, to be accepted in ITS as student, I had to pass state college entrance examination. This examination is held simultaneously by state universities in Indonesia. The participant could choose in which state university in Indonesia they wanted to study. All of participant, if they had been accepted, would payed the cost of study very low than in private university. And the last was whatever program study is chosen, the cost was same.
Why I wanted to be a student of ITS? ITS as state university has good image as high quality education in my city. Even the quality is good, I would pay less than in private university, one important reason as a background of my dream.

Then the big problem came up before the examination
My score result from graduating examination in senior high school was very bad. My average score was 5 from 5 lessons. The total of my score was only 37. It's really bad score. This problem had opportunity to make me down, but I was still try to focus on how I can be accepted in ITS. Then I decided to take apart in an intensive course to pass the entrance examination. Two months I have studied hard. I chose Environmental Engineering as my program study. In the test day, for two days, I mobilized all of my ability to answer the questions.

Miracle is happened
Monday, August 7, 2000 at 00.00 pm, the announcement of the entrance examination announced simultaneously in many newspaper and website http://www.cs.ui.ac.id/umptn00. From 471.411 the participant of the examination, around 73.798 (15.6%) participants were accepted in 45 state university in Indonesia, and I was one of them who was accepted in my dream university, ITS. August 31st, 2000, I officially became a student of Environmental Engineering ITS after I had followed High Education Information Program (IPT) ITS 2000/2001 for two days before.
