Survey in Tanggulangin

This survey I made in the year 2006. This area is located in Tanggulangin District of the Sidoarjo city in East Java province. I went to this entrepreneurs area of leather products with my friends (6 persons). Our task is making interview with the owner of stores in this area, some producers, and sellers and making report on how we can implement it in the other place with the better concept. This is some facts about Tanggulangin according our finding.

Tanggulangin Home Industry of Leather Products
Tanggulangin is a cluster of many home industries produce bags and shoes with local quality. There are a lot of stores (more than 100 stores) which offers many types, sizes, and functions of bags and shoes with different price and quality. The model of each product in some cases is similar, but sometimes also not. It depends on market trends and customers needs. In this place, consumer will get a unique trading with competitive fairly atmosphere. It's a unique place to buy and order products directly according to customer style and need. There are some advantages and disadvantages in buying products in this area.

The advantages are customer can choose and sometimes order the product they want directly with a very low price than in the normal market (for example in the shopping center in the city center). Sometimes we can bargain about the price and ask discount for some products. But still consumers have to understand the price of those products in the market. If consumers want to order, they can use the model, the color, the material, and the size by their own creativity or even with some suggestion from the producer. Consumer also can order products in big numbers (for example 100 units bag in certain model, color, material, and function). Consumer can see how their order is produced directly. If the consumer want to find any model of bag and shoe according to currently trend from popular image brand, it can be found very easily in this area. In overall, consumer is the king.

The disadvantage is if the consumer doesn't know how is the price of the products they want to order or buy, they will get expensive price than cheap. Normally, the products sold don't have high image brand. Sometimes the products don't have any brand at all, because they use popular brand and change the first, middle, or last alphabet. But there are still some producers give 'own brand' to their products. In general, these producers have already certain consumers segment in their area and of course they have a good image.

In this area, there are two types of stores. First, the store which offers products from their own production (Figure 1). Second, the store offers products from other producers (Figure 2). Even like that, the price is not different if you buy from the producer directly or from other store. It's always the same. The price is kept in fair level. Consumer can check it very easy.

Type 1
For example in this factory (Figure 1). They have a fix procedures to produce leather products with good machines and trained employees. To lower the production cost, they use local leather but with good quality. The model of their products are suited with the market trends and consumer needs. They have already some loyal consumers which are willing to buy in their stores than in other stores. They use also own brand for their products. The products produced is supplied to their own stores in Tanggulangin bags and shoes home industry. The added value of this factory is even they are small industry, they are able to compete with other industry outside this area even compete with china products (china products can be found in all market today).

This person explained about some procedures to produce leather products in their factory. This is one of some working places used. They locate the working areas according to the steps in producing products. In that time, they has a problem due to national financial crisis. They have to reduce the cost of products produced because the ability of market to consume is low. They made efficiency in many aspects also the employee. They divided their employee become two types. First, employees which work in their own house. Second, employees which work in the factory. They made efficiency in producing steps. they limited the number of products produced. But, still they want to keep their quality to keep their loyal consumers. They also have a fix prices for their products.

Type 2

From Figure 2, we can see one of the stores that doesn't produce products by them self, but take it from other producers in this area. They give price in normal scale, like if consumer buy it directly from producer. Like in the first type, they have a financial problem due to national financial crisis, this store has the same problem. The number of consumers decrease very much than in the past.

Current Situation

Tanggulangin is one example of home (small scale) manufacture industry area in the field of leather's products. There are a lot local persons involve in this home industry. More than 90% of the population in around Tanggulangin district have been entrepreneurs in this field. There are different person with different business and ability in competing each other. Interesting place to be visited. Unfortunately their unique characteristics in trading has been lose due to an issue of Lapindo Mud and national financial crisis.

Lapindo mud is a tragedy which made Sidoarjo city people lose their hauses and other valuable things caused by hot mud flood. This hot mud flood has made many vegetation and productive areas in the city of Sidoarjo become unproductive area. The high of the hot mud in the first time up to height of the people houses. This tragedy also has made the route from Surabaya to other cities or areas from Sidoarjo become broken. Up to now, this problem is still unsolved and the government is still trying to overcome it and making satisfy many parties.

National financial crisis is economic crisis which is happened caused by the lower value of rupiah currency. The market had reducing ability to buy products. It results decreasing in offering of products from producers. Up to now, Indonesia is still struggling to solve this problem.
